This New York-based music institution has staked a sizable claim on the more eclectic side of the L.A. live music scene with a sprawling, multi-level venue plopped right in the heart of Hollywood, just a couple blocks west of the consumer orgy at Highland. Yes, the Knit, home to free jazz, experimental hip-hop and obscure Scandanavian metal is located in a strip mall next to a movie theater and DSW shoe store. Once you get beyond the culture shock, you'll find an alarmingly plush and somewhat corporate space. The front bar is all dark wood and recessed lighting, with a small stage for more intimate performances. The main concert hall is a large, inviting room (capacity: 525) which regularly hosts big-time acts like the Roots and PJ Harvey next to more avant-garde bands like Norway's atmospheric Under Byen and Brooklyn all-girl synth-popsters Au Revoir Simone. The lack of circulation can cause things to heat up at packed events, but a solid tap selection (including our favorite Stella Artois) and relatively reasonable prices go a long way in keeping you cool. There's a kitchen that serves late if you get the munchies between sets.
