Description

Ron Pippin is part avian taxidermist, part apothecary and part the Dr. Frankenstein of the fine art set. He's also a perfect example of the sort of challenging, millennial, risk-taking artist who tends to be exhibited at this large Bergamot Station gallery.

The gallery has been around since the early '90s. In that brief time, Sherry Frumkin and her associate-turned-partner Christine Duval managed to exhibit such bright, cutting-edge lights as Yossi Govrin, Robert Strati, Tanja Rector and Janieta Eyre. Govrin and Strati are installationists; the young Eyre, a Bertha Mason-meets-Cindy Sherman photographer; and Rector paints choice Vermeer copies, then obscures them with beeswax.

The gallery space is equally creative. The front room is a big rectangle that's been cut by a central wall just perfect for showcasing a single, large-scale, best-of-show work. Another room (there are three total) is narrow and claustrophobic, with walls and closets that jut out. That's where they used to keep the Pippins.
